Fournier the way forward for PSG

Paris Saint-Germain FC have appointed former France player Laurent Fournier as their new coach.

Press conference
The 40-year-old Fournier, who played for PSG from 1991-98, oversaw first-team training this morning before being unveiled by chairman Francis Graille at a press conference at the club's training base at Saint-Germain-en-Yvelines. He has signed a contract until the end of the season, although Graille admitted: "We have already thought about an extension."

Friends reunited
Fournier will be assisted by his former PSG team-mate Alain Roche, 37, who has been named the new sporting director. Both men were in the side that lifted the 1995/96 UEFA Cup Winners' Cup. Fournier, who also played for Olympique de Marseille, AS Saint-Etienne, FC Girondins de Bordeaux and Olympique Lyonnais, has no worries about taking over a team lying 12th in Ligue 1. "There is a good squad of players here," he said.

Reserve role
The Lyon native, capped three times by France, began his coaching career with SC Bastia after retiring from playing in 1998. Fournier was dismissed from that post in April 1999. The following campaign he assumed the helm of fourth division FC Pacy-sur-Eure, and remained there until rejoining PSG as reserve-team coach in February 2003.
