Offer declined
The Bundesliga side announced on Wednesday that the 55-year-old had stood down with immediate effect. Dortmund general manager Michael Meier also tendered his resignation, but new club president Dr Reinhard Rauball refused Meier's offer, saying he wanted as little disruption as possible.
Invaluable contribution
Rauball added that he would respect Niebaum's decision and praised him: "Our victories in the 1990s will always be linked to his name." Niebaum had been involved with Dortmund for more than 20 years and had acted as club president for 18 years until last October. The highlight of his reign came with victory in the UEFA Champions League final of 1996/97.
