Clinical Kluivert
A fifth-minute strike from Dutch forward Patrick Kluivert was enough to give Newcastle victory against visitors Tottenham Hotspur FC. He neatly slotted the ball past Tottenham goalkeeper Paul Robinson from close range after a low pass from Alan Shearer.
Bramble blow
However, the win was marred by news that defender Titus Bramble will require a hernia operation after being substituted just before half-time, and will be out for between four and six weeks. This rules him out of the semi-finals, the draw for which will be made on Monday.
Dickov decisive
Earlier, Blackburn secured their first appearance in the semi-finals of the competition since 1960 when they defeated Championship side Leicester City FC at Ewood Park. Striker Paul Dickov scored the all-important goal against his former club with a penalty in the 83rd minute after Leicester defender Darren Kenton had fouled Norwegian Morten Gamst Pedersen in the area.
