Jefferson Farfán's strike propelled PSV Eindhoven past FC Groningen and seven points clear in the Eredivisie.

By Berend Scholten

PSV Eindhoven stretched their lead at the top of the Eredivisie to seven points on Thursday with a 1-0 win away to FC Groningen.

Farfán decider
Jefferson Farfán got the only goal of the game moments before half-time when he turned in Ji-Sung Park's low cross from the right. Groningen strove to find an equaliser and almost snatched a point in the final minute when striker Martin Drenth struck the post with a header.

Alkmaar trail
But PSV held on to win for the 20th time in 25 Eredivisie matches, and for the 17th consecutive game away from home in the league. Guus Hiddink's side lead the Eredivisie with 64 points from 25 matches, though second-placed AZ Alkmaar could reduce their lead to four points if they win their game in hand.

Heerenveen win
On Wednesday, SC Heerenveen climbed into sixth and back into contention for a UEFA Cup place after winning for the first time since 12 February, 2-0 away at ADO Den Haag.

Väyrynen strike
Heerenveen got off to an excellent start when Mika Väyrynen finished off an excellent solo run to put his side ahead after only three minutes. Arnold Bruggink made sure of the points from the penalty spot with 15 minutes to play after Jean-Paul Saeijs had brought down Georgios Samaras in the penalty area.
