Bolton frustrated by Southampton

Bolton Wanderers FC's hopes of claiming a UEFA Champions League berth were hurt by Southampton FC.

Giannakopoulos glee
Sam Allardyce's Bolton side knew that a third successive league win would move them above Everton FC – who now have two games in hand – and into fourth place. The home side took the lead in the 25th minute, Greek international midfield player Stylianos Giannakopoulos heading in an El Hadji Diouf cross.

Second-half revival
Diouf and Jay-Jay Okocha, among others, had chances to increase Bolton's lead, although the visitors might have levelled only for Jussi Jääskeläinen to produce a fine double save to deny Peter Crouch and Matt Oakley. The Bolton goalkeeper was powerless to stop Kevin Phillips equalising in the 69th minute, however, the Southampton striker latching on to a long ball from Rory Delap and shooting beyond Jääskeläinen to secure a point that moved Harry Redknapp's team out of the bottom three on goal difference.

Late leveller
Middlesbrough, meanwhile, missed the chance to climb to seventh place as Fulham FC produced a resilient display at the Riverside stadium. Luís Boa Morte's free-kick early in the second half nearly put the away team in front only to strike the crossbar, but American striker Brian McBride looked to have earned three points with the opening goal of the game eight minutes from time. A last-minute penalty from Boudewijn Zenden, however, awarded after Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink had been fouled by Fulham goalkeeper Edwin van der Sar, gave Middlesbrough a draw.
