Step up
Vercauteren, capped 63 times by Belgium, had been assistant coach since 1998 before taking over on a temporary basis from Hugo Broos in early February. The 48-year-old's contact will run until the summer of 2007 when he will either continue in the role or become technical manager at the Brussels club.
'Vision and potential'
"We are very glad that Franky has decided to accept the coaching job," Herman Van Holsbeeck, the Anderlecht general manager, said. Vercauteren added: "I agree with the vision and the potential of the club. I am aware that being head coach can be a short-term mission. It is something that can last six months, one year or three years."
Anderlecht hero
A left-sided midfielder, Vercauteren played 368 matches in 12 seasons for Anderlecht, scoring 92 goals and winning the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup in 1976 and 1978, and the UEFA Cup in 1983. Vercauteren, the Belgian Player of the Year in 1983, also played for FC Nantes Atlantique and RWD Molenbeek, where he ended his career in 1993.
