Athletic Club Bilbao's Javi González has extended his contract with the Spanish team by two years until June 2007. The 31-year-old midfielder, who would have become a free agent in the summer, will have spent a decade at San Mamés when the new deal expires. "Money cannot buy the affection I have for this club. I told my representatives not to consider offers from any club that wasn't Athletic," he said.
FC Schalke 04 defender Christian Pander will be sidelined for six months as he faces surgery for a knee injury. The German Under-21 international ruptured ligaments in his left knee during last Saturday's 3-0 defeat at VfB Stuttgart. Schalke had hoped the injury would require only minor treatment, but after consulting a specialist, the club's medical team decided an operation was needed.
Werder Bremen captain Frank Baumann will be out for three weeks after surgery on an infected ankle. "I was in so much pain that an operation could no longer be avoided. I hope to return as soon as possible," said the 29-year-old German international. Meanwhile, Hamburger SV's 24-year-old goalkeeper Sascha Kirchstein faces a six-week lay-off after damaging the meniscus in his left knee and going under the knife today.
Ajax have agreed two-year professional contracts with homegrown talents Jasper Kok, Cees Keizer and Michael Timisela, who have all signed up until 30 June 2007. Kok, 19, is a left-sided defender, Keizer, also 19, a left-sided midfielder, while 18-year-old defender Timisela operates down the right.
FC Dinamo Bucuresti and FC Farul Constanta will contest the Romanian Cup final on 11 May after winning today's semi-final ties. Dinamo reached a sixth consecutive final (they have won four of the last five) by defeating FC National Bucuresti 4-0 and 5-2 on aggregate. Farul, by contrast, will play in their first showpiece occasion after edging past FC Universitatea Craiova on away goals, today's 2-1 loss in Craiova following a 1-0 home success in the first leg.
FK Sarajevo and NK Široki Brijeg will meet in the Bosnia-Herzegovnian Cup final. Sarajevo won 4-1 at home to complete a 6-1 aggregate triumph against FK Slavija Sarajevo. Široki Brijeg progressed on away goals, having overcome NK Zrinjski 1-0 at home before today's 2-1 away defeat. The final will be played over two legs, on 11 May at Široki Brijeg, and six days later in the capital.
FC Shirak coach Andranik Adamyan has left his post to take up the role of chief executive at the Armenian Premier League club. The 53-year-old had been coach since 1990 and led the team to league titles in 1992, 1994 and 1999. Shirak were also runners-up four times during his tenure and won the Armenian Super Cup twice. His assistant Zhora Barsegyan will take the reins, his first opportunity to manage a top-flight club.
