Dortmund blunt Bremen ambition

Werder Bremen's UEFA Champions League qualification hopes were hit by defeat against BV Borussia Dortmund.

By Mark Bennett

Werder Bremen’s UEFA Champions League aspirations took a major blow as a goal from Tomás Rosický enabled BV Borussia Dortmund to edge a narrow 1-0 win at the Westfalenstadion.

Five-point gap
The Czech Republic midfield player scored on 32 minutes to leave the outgoing Bundesliga champions five points adrift of VfB Stuttgart in third, and a Champions League spot, with four games remaining. The win kept alive Dortmund’s own European hopes, however, as the 1997 UEFA Champions League winners are within four points of today's opponents and Bayer 04 Leverkusen, who currently lie fifth and sixth respectively.

Hamburg held
With Bremen losing, victory would have seen Hamburger SV sidle alongside them on 51 points, but the side remain seventh following a goalless draw at home against VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach. The point almost assured the visitors of top-flight football next season though, as the two-time UEFA Cup winners moved six points clear of the relegation zone and have a far better goal difference than the other teams fighting for survival.
