Article body
Germany defender Kerstin Stegemann will miss the rest of UEFA WOMEN's EURO 2005™ after suffering a knee injury in Thursday’s 4-0 win against Italy.
Ligament damage
The experienced right-back limped off 19 minutes into the victory in Preston that took the holders into the semi-finals. The 27-year-old was examined immediately by the German medical staff and the first diagnosis revealed that she has most probably torn a ligament in her right knee.
Early departure
Stegemann, who helped Germany win the 2003 FIFA Women's World Cup, UEFA European Women's Championships in 1997 and 2001 and two Olympic bronze medals, has already flown home and will be examined again in hospital to determine how severe the damage actually is. Germany now meet France on Sunday in Warrington needing a draw to clinch first place in Group B.
