Valur keep pace with FH

Monthly review: FH Hafnarfjördur and Valur Reykjavík have made a flying start to the Icelandic season.

By Stefán Stefánsson

Perfect start
A 1-0 win at KR Reykjavík made it four wins in four for FH on 29 May - extending their unbeaten run from last season to 20 games - but two days later, Valur won 3-0 against Fram Reykjavík to draw level on points with FH.

Valur rewarded
Valur remain behind the leaders on goal difference, but coach Willum Thór Thórsson is delighted with his side's start to the season. "I never expected us to have so many points but now we have to concentrate on one game at a time," he said. "We need to set our mind to that now more than ever."

First draw
The fourth round of results also brought the opening tie of the 2005 Icelandic season with newcomers Thróttur Reykjavík earning their first point of the season in drawing 2-2 against Keflavík. Keflavík are third in the table, five points adrift of FH and Valur.

German signing
The transfer window in Iceland closed on 1 June with Grindavík signing 35-year-old former VfB Stuttgart, 1. FC Kaiserslautern and MSV Duisburg midfield player Michael Zeyer to boost their injury-ravaged squad, which includes five players nursing serious problems.

Arsenal player
Keflavík have pulled off a coup of sorts by bringing in 19-year-old Arsenal FC defender Issa Adbulkadir on loan for the summer. The Somali-born player may help fill the gap left by the departure of Irish defender Brian O'Callaghan.

English imports
Still without a point, ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar have signed 19-year-old Sunderland AFC striker Jack Wanless to join his team-mate from the English club, defender Lewis Dodd. Meanwhile, Fylkir have signed 23-year-old striker Christian Christiansen from Danish side Aalborg BK.

Goalkeeper retires
ÍA Akranes goalkeeper Thórdur Thórdarson has retired from football on medical advice. The 33-year-old, who has played 159 top-flight games and was once capped by the Icelandic national team, has been told to hang up his gloves because of a mild form of epilepsy.
