Out of contract
Carroll signed for United in the summer of 2001 from Wigan Athletic FC in a €4m transfer. However, the 27-year-old was out of contract at the end of the season and has decided to move on after failing to hold down a first-team place in competition with American shot-stopper Tim Howard.
'Best years ahead of him'
West Ham manager Alan Pardew said: "Roy comes to West Ham in his prime and because of his association with Manchester United, he will not be fazed by the size of this club. I believe Roy's best years are ahead of him and when a club is reintroduced to the Premier League, goalkeeper is an essential position."
