Genoa land on-loan Abbiati

On the day Dimitrios Eleftheropoulos transferred to AC Milan, Christian Abbiati has been loaned to Genoa 1893.

Key signing
The 27-year-old Italian international made only three league appearances last season but is expected to be handed the No1 shirt by Genoa coach Francesco Guidolin as the Liguria club prepare to rejoin the élite. However, Abbiati's situation at the end of the 2005/06 season remains a question mark, with Genoa having the option of paying Milan €3m for part-ownership of the former Monza Calcio player.

Championship winner
Abbiati, capped twice by the Azzurri, has won two Italian titles and made 110 Serie A appearances in seven seasons following his arrival at the San Siro in 1998. His role as Dida's understudy will be taken by Dimitrios Eleftheropoulos, signed today on a free transfer from FC Messina Peloro.
