Duo's debut
Deportivo defeated 2001 finalists Newcastle 2-1 in Spain a week ago, but the home side tonight fielded debutants Emre Belözoglu and Scott Parker in an attempt to turn the tie. However, with those new faces in midfield, Newcastle took a while to settle.
Emre effort
They did produce a chance on 16 minutes as captain Alan Shearer found Emre, whose long-range effort was blocked by José Molina. Joan Capdevila then was played through for the visitors but shot high.
Milner goal
Shearer is always a threat for Newcastle, nearing Jackie Milburn's club record 200 goals, but Molina dived to save his first chance, a strong header after a James Milner free-kick. But the goalkeeper was beaten in the 39th minute, Milner turning the ball in at the near post following a Lee Bowyer effort.
Deportivo respond
The visitors responded superbly, and struck before the break. Aldo Duscher beat Jean-Alain Boumsong to an aerial free-kick and the ball fell for Jorge Andrade to add to his first-leg goal, chipping Shay Given. And it took just three second-half minutes for Deportivo to score again, Pedro Munitis gratefully making the most of a defensive mix-up to beat the advancing Given and then strike in after Stephen Carr blocked.
Marseille meeting
Now Newcastle had to score three times, and they went about their task with spirit. Although Given had to tip over a Munitis effort, Shearer volleyed over, Molina saved a strong Shola Ameobi shot and Emre's late free-kick hit the post. Deportivo, though, had done enough and will welcome Marseille on Tuesday with the return a fortnight later deciding the UEFA Cup entrants - Newcastle unable to match their fine runs in that competition over the last two seasons.
