Article body
Gritty Grindavík
ÍBV Vestmannaeyjar gained a late reprieve, despite losing at Fylkir, while Grindavík, second-bottom at the start of play, survived with a gritty 2-1 win over Keflavík. Thróttur's success at Valur Reykjavík ensured the bottom four were separated by just two points in a remarkable relegation fight. Breidablik and Víkingur join the Premier League after coming first and second in the First Division.
Cup final meeting
Valur clung on to second spot on goal difference despite their defeat, while ÍA Akranes grabbed third and the chance of UEFA Cup qualification. They will take their place if Valur beat Fram in the Icelandic Cup final on 24 September. If it goes the other way, Fram will enter Europe from the second tier of domestic football, with ÍA settling for the UEFA Intertoto Cup.
Hafnarfjördur departures
Despite their title, Hafnarfjördur lost striker Allan Borgvardt. The 25-year-old Dane, voted Player of the Season, has signed for Norway's Viking FK after three terms in Iceland. His compatriot, 29-year-old midfielder Dennis Siim, has also left the champions for Randers SK Freja in his homeland. Siim will be more easily replaced having made only six Hafnarfjördur appearances. Borgvardt's departure three games before the finish meant he was pipped to the golden boot. Having been level with team-mate Tryggvi Gudmundsson on 13 goals, his departure left the path open for Gudmundsson to go clear with a final-day hat-trick.
Gíslason joins exodus
KR Reykjavík's promising 17-year-old Rúrik Gíslason has joined the country's foreign legion, penning a two-year deal with Charlton Athletic FC of the English Premiership. KR have also hired Teitur Thordarson as coach. The experienced ex-pro has coached Norwegian sides SFK Lyn Oslo, SK Brann and the Estonian national team.
