Bayern and Chelsea march on

Members

FC Bayern München extended their Bundesliga winning streak to a record 14 matches on Saturday, while Chelsea FC kept up their perfect Premiership record.

German champions FC Bayern München extended their Bundesliga winning streak to a record 14 matches on Saturday, while in England Chelsea FC also kept up their perfect record, but French league leaders Olympique Lyonnais had to settle for a point.

Six months unbeaten
Bayern were below their best as they beat Hannover 96 1-0, but stay top of the table with a flawless record from five matches this season, having now gone past their own previous German record of consecutive top divison victories. They have not dropped points since 12 March, when FC Schalke 04 prevailed 1-0.

Lacking sparkle
Martin Demichelis scored the only goal for Felix Magath's side, heading home in the 14th minute. However, Bayern were without playmaker Michael Ballack, who is still on the sidelines with an ankle injury after missing Wednesday's UEFA Champions League victory over SK Rapid Wien.

Karimi influence
Magath handed a start to Ali Karimi in Ballack's attacking midfield position, but the Iranian international could not quite exert the same influence as his illustrious colleague, although he brought a good save from goalkeeper Robert Enke after exchanging passes with José Paolo Guerrero.

'Some problems'

Micoud winner
Werder Bremen remain unbeaten and two points behind Bayern following a thrilling 3-2 victory against BV Borussia Dortmund, Johan Micoud scoring the winner 12 minutes from time. Germany's third UEFA Champions League contenders, Schalke, welcome Hertha BSC Berlin on Sunday.

Flawless Chelsea
Premiership pace-setters Chelsea FC made it six wins out of six with a 2-0 win away to Charlton Athletic FC. Second-half goals from Arjen Robben and Hernán Crespo were enough to end the only other 100 percent record in the English top flight.

Extra gear
Chelsea assistant manager Steve Clarke said: "The first half was an even game. At half-time we had a little word with the lads and asked them to step up a gear - and I think it showed in the second half that we were on top."

Mancunian challenge
The Londoners stretched their lead to six points, although that will be cut if either Manchester team wins on Sunday. Manchester United FC face rivals and fellow UEFA Champions League contenders Liverpool at Anfield, while Manchester City FC take on Bolton Wanderers FC at home. Arsenal FC play on Monday at home to Everton FC.

Wiltord equaliser
Lyon are still on course for a French record fifth successive title despite being held 1-1 by FC Girondins de Bordeaux. Vladimir Šmicer's opener for the hosts was cancelled out by former Bordeaux player Sylvain Wiltord, who scored just two minutes after coming on in a triple change that also saw Tiago and striker Fred take the field.

Houllier 'gamble'
"I gambled and it paid off," said Lyon coach Gérard Houllier, whose side were second best for much of the contest. Meanwhile, LOSC Lille Métropole bounced back from their midweek Champions League loss to SL Benfica, defeating OGC Nice by the same 1-0 scoreline. Jean Makoun claimed the winner in just the fifth minute.

Inter hit form
FC Internazionale Milano went joint top of the Italian Serie A with a comfortable 3-0 win at home to US Lecce. Obafemi Martins, Dejan Stanković and Julio Cruz scored the goals for Inter, who will fall back on Sunday when Juventus, Udinese Calcio and AS Livorno Calcio attempt to extend their winning starts.
