Lille avenge St-Etienne defeat

LOSC Lille Métropole reached the last 16 of the French League Cup as holders RC Strasbourg bowed out against second division opposition.

Youthful side
With coach Claude Puel following the lead of fellow UEFA Champions League contenders Olympique Lyonnais in fielding young players for the League Cup, a 12th-minute Danté Bonfim effort and a goal from Peter Franquart six minutes later proved to be enough for Lille.

Monaco success
UEFA Cup challengers AS Monaco FC also made it through to the last 16 after Gerard López's strike gave them a 1-0 home victory against Dijon FCO, but holders RC Strasbourg were knocked out with a 1-0 defeat at second division SM Caen - whom they beat in last season's final.

Méïté own goal
Abdoulaye Méïté's 85th-minute own goal eliminated Olympique de Marseille at FC Girondins de Bordeaux, while AJ Auxerre got the better of RC Lens, coming from behind twice to win 3-2 at the Félix-Bolleart stadium. Another UEFA Cup hopeful, Stade Rennais FC, went down 1-0 at second division Montpellier Hérault SC.
