Article body
Last season's runners-up FC Ranger's continue to blaze a trail in the Andorran First Division after defeating champions UE Sant Julià 2-0 to open up a three-point cushion at the summit.
Inconsistent form
Sant Julià failed to win just one game last season, but have already dropped five points after an inconsistent start to the campaign. They responded to an opening-day draw against Inter Club d'Escaldes in thrilling style, beating Atlètic Club d'Escaldes 5-0 before a stunning 9-0 win over UE Extremenya left them poised to claim top spot with victory at home to Ranger's. But they failed to do so as the visitors swept them to one side, with a 2-0 win which maintains their own 100 per cent start to the campaign.
Ranger's reap reward
Ranger's fourth consecutive win was all the more impressive as it came just a week after they knocked FC Santa Coloma off top spot with an impressive 2-0 victory thanks to goals from Ruivo and Genís García. The result left Viçens Marqués' side three points clear of their opponents, with Inter third on eight points and Sant Julià a point further back.
Extremenya overwhelmed
The leading quartet has seen their goal difference boosted by comprehensive wins over newly-promoted Extremenya, who have endured a torrid start to their season. Two 9-0 losses to Sant Julià and Santa Coloma, came after they were hit for seven by Ranger's on the opening day, although they did score against the league front-runners. Inter won 2-0 last week, but Extremenya will take some heart from the fact they have now played the top four.
Stadia struggle
But while the First Division season thrives on the field, there remain problems off it. As hosts of the Under-17 European Championship Qualifying Stage, Andorra were forced to play one match in the South of France and could find themselves further devoid of facilities if plans to demolish the Estadi d'Aixovall go ahead. The ground is privately owned so the Andorran Football Federation are in talks about alternatives.
