European exits
Former Poland manager Engel, 53, had succeeded Werner Licka on the eve of the season and made a fine start as Wisła beat Panathinaikos FC 3-1 in the first leg of their UEFA Champions League third qualifying round tie. However, a 4-1 defeat in Greece ended Wisła's hopes in that competition, and precipitated the departure of key forward Tomasz Frankowski to Spanish club Elche CF. Another Polish international striker, Maciej Zurawski, had already left for Celtic FC in Scotland. Engel's men then exited the UEFA Cup at the hands of first-round opponents Vitória SC from Portugal.
Problem of style
Wisła's domestic fortunes have also dipped in recent weeks, with a 2-1 defeat at Zaglebie Lubin preceding a 2-2 home draw against Korona Kielce on Sunday. Nonetheless, they remain top of the Ekstraklasa. A club statement said: "The coach has been sacked because he could not guarantee an improvement in the team's style of play." Tomasz Kulawik and Kazimierz Moskal have taken temporary charge. Engel's predecessor Licka was dismissed, despite winning the title, because Wisła owner Boguslaw Cupial was unhappy with his side's playing style.
