CSKA add to trophy haul

Members

PFC CSKA Moskva added the Russian Premier League title to their 2004/05 UEFA Cup crown on Sunday, securing the championship with a game to spare.

Carvalho crucial
Fittingly, CSKA's most influential player this season, playmaker Daniel Carvalho, scored the winning goal as they defeated their city rivals in a hard-fought encounter. Aleksei Berezutski rammed home a rebound to open the scoring after half-time, before Carvalho struck to give CSKA some breathing space. Denis Kolodin ensured a nervy finish after pulling one back in added time, but Valeri Gazzaev's team held on to secure their second league title.

'Strong, young and ambitious'
"This season was very hard, but fantastic at the same time, and we achieved the best possible result," the coach said. "I would like to congratulate the players, the fans and the club president – they all contributed to our success. The players should be praised for their team sprit, skill and will to win. This is a strong, young and ambitious team." In May, CSKA won Russia's first major European trophy, defeating Sporting Clube de Portugal 3-1 in Lisbon to win the UEFA Cup.

Last-day decider
Elsewhere, Lokomotiv ended a six-match winless streak with a 3-0 away victory against bottom club FC Terek Chechenskaya Respublika, while Spartak captain Yegor Titov scored the only goal to beat FC Saturn Moskovskaya Oblast. They remain locked together on 55 points, and play each other on the final day for second place and a berth in the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League. Due to their higher number of victories, Spartak need only a draw to keep their noses in front.

Alania go down
FC Alania Vladikavkaz were relegated after losing 2-1 to FC Tom Tomsk. They cannot finish higher than 15th, and will join Terek in the second tier next season. FC Rubin Kazan guaranteed themselves a fourth-place finish and UEFA Cup qualification with a 5-1 victory against FC Torpedo Moskva, while FC Zenit St. Petersburg lost again to drop out of contention for the European places.
