Norway rallies to support Enerly

Fredrikstad FK captain Dagfinn Enerly has been inundated with sympathy after undergoing surgery on a neck injury that could leave him paralysed.

Overwhelming response
"Dagfinn has been overwhelmed by the response," his wife Mona said. "He wants to thank everyone for their kind thoughts. He will try to read the wishes that have been left by various people on Norwegian websites." Fredrikstad's supporters intend to collect all the reaction in a book that they will present to the player, who is recovering after undergoing surgery yesterday.

Accidental collision
The 31-year-old midfielder, who has two Norway caps, collided with a team-mate as he jumped to defend a corner in the third minute of the match, and a delay of several minutes ensued before he was stretchered off. Doctors decided to operate quickly amid fears that Enerly could be left paralysed from the neck down.

Widespread sympathy
The news dominated the build-up to last night's UEFA Champions League tie between Fredrikstad's Norwegian rivals Rosenborg BK and Real Madrid CF. The Spanish side's captain Raúl González offered his sympathy to Enerly and his family, while former team-mate Roar Strand simply reflected that the game was "meaningless". Meanwhile, Norway coach Åge Hareide said: "He should know we are thinking of him and we hope everything works out for the best for him and his family. We're crossing our fingers."
