Stronach loses stomach for Austria

Members

FK Austria Wien's main investor, Austro-Canadian businessman Frank Stronach, has announced that he will be ending his involvement with the club.

Supporters unhappy
After some unconvincing performances in recent weeks, supporters had started to express dissatisfaction with Stronach's role, and the businessman has now said he will cease his investment in the club in summer 2007 to end a nine-year involvement with Austria.

Helpful decision
"Frank saw all the difficulties and unhappiness at the club and made this decision to help Austria Wien," said club vice-president Andreas Rudas, who is also Stronach's spokesman. "If there is a group of investors who think they can run the club, they now have a chance to do so."

Major investment
Stronach has agreed to step aside earlier should other investors come forward. He first took an interest in Austria in 1998, writing an initial cheque for €750,000, buying players and pledging to make the team a force in European football.
