Wolfsburg appoint Augenthaler

Former Bayer 04 Leverkusen coach Klaus Augenthaler has been named as the new man in charge of VfL Wolfsburg having agreed a contract until 2007.

Former Bayer 04 Leverkusen coach Klaus Augenthaler has been named as the new man in charge of VfL Wolfsburg having agreed a contract that will run until 2007 with the Bundesliga club.

'Natural authority'
The former German international, who was part of the side that lifted the FIFA World Cup trophy in 1990, will replace Holger Fach who was sacked last week. "Augenthaler is one of Germany's most highly regarded football coaches," said Wolfsburg chairman Lothar Sander. "He personifies a natural authority and works extremely well."

New role
Wolfsburg's sporting director Thomas Strunz also departed at the same time as Fach, and his duties will now be assumed by 54-year-old Klaus Fuchs, who has worked for the club since 1999 as their general manager and will continue in that role in addition to his new position.

Leverkusen role
Augenthaler spent his entire playing career with FC Bayern München before taking charge of Leverkusen in May 2003, guiding the club into the UEFA Champions League in 2003/04 but was sacked in September following Leverkusen's worst start to a Bundesliga season in 23 years. Wolfsburg currently lie in 13th position in the German top flight with 18 points from 17 matches.
