South-coast rivals
During his first spell at Portsmouth, Redknapp led the team into the Premiership, and then helped them avoid relegation during their first season back in the top flight. He stood down last term saying he needed "a complete break" from football, but two weeks later joined south-coast rivals Southampton, with whom he was relegated.
Talented youngsters
Redknapp is a former manager of West Ham United FC, where he oversaw the development of English internationals Rio Ferdinand, Frank Lampard, Joe Cole, Jermain Defoe and Michael Carrick. "I made a massive mistake in leaving and I'm delighted to be back," said Redknapp. "But we all make mistakes in life. Milan [Mandaric, Portsmouth's owner] has taken a big gamble on me. As far as I'm concerned, the chance to come back was too good an opportunity to miss."
