Feyenoord have won the race to sign the highly-regarded Dutch international defender Ron Vlaar from AZ Alkmaar.

Consistent displays
The 20-year-old passed a medical in Rotterdam this afternoon before signing a three-and-a-half year contract. Vlaar has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the past year, with his consistent displays for Alkmaar and the Netherlands Under-21 side earning him two full caps under Marco van Basten.

'Very pleased'
Vlaar had been linked with a move to Premiership club Tottenham Hotspur FC and travelled to England earlier in the week for talks. However, he was determined to sign for Feyenoord. “I am very pleased,” he said. “It was my preference to play for a big Dutch club. So when Feyenoord called I didn’t really have to think for too long.”
