Burton buckle as United attack

Premiership pair Manchester United FC and Everton FC both progressed to the fourth round of the English FA Cup after winning replays in contrasting style.

Precocious Italian striker Giuseppe Rossi was in fine fettle as Manchester United FC eased to a comprehensive 5-0 victory against non-league Burton Albion FC in their FA Cup third-round replay.

Clough history
After absorbing some early pressure, United broke the deadlock in their first real attack of the game on eight minutes when Louis Saha tapped in a low cross from Kieran Richardson after fine build-up play from defender Gerard Piqué. It was the worst possible start for the visitors, whose player-manager Nigel Clough scored a winning goal at Old Trafford for Nottingham Forest FC exactly 20 years ago to the day - and any thoughts of similar success quickly vanished beneath a red tide.

Key absentees
Rossi doubled the lead midway through the half when he rose unmarked to head in Mikaël Silvestre's pinpoint cross, and Richardson made it 3-0 seven minutes after half-time with a blistering strike from the edge of the penalty area. With Wayne Rooney and Ronaldo both suspended, United manager Sir Alex Ferguson opted for an inexperienced starting lineup and had the luxury of bringing on Rio Ferdinand, Gary Neville and Ryan Giggs just after the hour.

Old spice
Giggs soon made an impression, drilling a right-footed shot into the far corner after good link-up play with Rossi, before the Italian youngster sealed the win with a clinical strike late on. United will now face Wolverhampton Wanderers FC in the fourth round, when Everton FC line up against Chelsea FC after David Moyes' side edged a 1-0 win against Millwall FC in the night's other replay. Australian international Tim Cahill scored the decisive goal against his former employers on 72 minutes.
