Giannakopoulos goal
Just three days after a last-gasp defeat against Wigan Athletic FC in the English League Cup semi-final, Arsenal again found them on the receiving end of late drama at the Reebok stadium. Stelios Giannakopoulos scored what proved to be the only goal of the game with eight minutes remaining, heading in Ricardo Gardner's pinpoint left-wing cross. It condemned the holders, for whom Robin Van Persie and Sol Campbell both hit the crossbar, to the likelihood of no domestic silverware this season.
Lampard salvation
José Mourinho's Chelsea are seemingly well on their way to reclaiming their Premiership title, but they were left indebted to Frank Lampard after his late equaliser at Goodison Park forced a replay. Until then Everton had led through James McFadden's first-half goal. Brentford had no such problems against Sunderland as in-form striker Dudley Campbell scored twice to overturn Julio Arca's 66th-minute strike at Griffin Park.
Capital gains
Across London, West Ham United FC progressed to the fifth round after an absorbing 4-2 victory against Premiership rivals Blackburn Rovers FC at Upton Park. Teddy Sheringham's penalty cancelled out David Bentley's first-minute opener before Matthew Etherington and an own goal from Zurab Khizanishvilli gave the home side a two-goal advantage. A second-half strike from Lucas Neil gave Alan Pardew's side cause for concern until Bobby Zamora scored his fourth goal in five matches to secure their progress.
Late drama
A last-minute strike from Jay Bothroyd gave Charlton Athletic FC a narrow 2-1 win over Leyton Orient FC, who had equalised Jonathan Fortune's goal through Lee Steele, while Manchester City FC overcame Wigan Athletic FC thanks to Andy Cole's strike six minutes from time. Elsewhere, Middlesbrough FC and Birmingham City FC were both held to 1-1 draws away to Reading FC and Coventry City FC, respectively.
Baroš double
Two Milan Baroš strikes helped Aston Villa FC to a 3-1 win against Port Vale FC, who had briefly threatened through a Nathan Lowndes header five minutes from time before Steven Davis added Villa's third. Earlier in the day, Newcastle United FC overcame Cheltenham Town FC with a shaky 2-0 win at Whaddon Road.
