Lowly Burton blunt United attack

Members

Manchester United FC face an FA Cup third-round replay, but Fulham FC and Tottenham Hotspur FC both crashed out to lower-league opposition.

Bardsley clearances
United went into their game against Burton at the Pirelli stadium as red-hot favourites, but it was the home team that took the initiative early on. Only a goalline clearance from Phil Bardsley prevented Jon Shaw handing Nigel Clough's side a shock lead on 14 minutes and he repeated the feat just before half-time to deny Darren Stride as United struggled on a heavy pitch.

Deeney heroics
The visitors did have chances at the other end, with Richard Jones and Louis Saha both going close, but it was the second-half introduction of Wayne Rooney that caused the home team the most problems. The England striker twice forced saves from Saul Deeney, and the 22-year-old goalkeeper made another stunning intervention in added time to deny Jones as the non-league outfit held on for a lucrative replay at Old Trafford.

Garner strength
Fulham would relish a similar opportunity but will not be granted one after they crashed out of the competition after a 2-1 home defeat at the hands of Leyton Orient FC. Glyn Garner was the hero for the visitors at Craven Cottage, saving a penalty from Collins John as Orient withstood a second-half barrage from Fulham to book a place in Monday's fourth-round draw.

Penalty woe
Craig Easton and Joe Keith handed the fourth division outfit a deserved two-goal lead before half-time as Fulham were caught cold. The Premiership outfit soon reduced the deficit through John five minutes after the restart, and the Dutch striker had a great chance to equalise soon after, but saw his spot-kick well saved by Garner. Championship side Leicester City FC showed them how it was done as they fought back from two goals down to beat Tottenham Hotspur FC.

Leicester comeback
The visitors looked to be cruising after Paul Stalteri's stunning strike on 41 minutes doubled the lead Jermaine Jenas had given them. Substitute Elvis Hammond replied almost immediately for Leicester, however, tapping the ball in from close range before Stephen Hughes equalised just before the hour mark, and with a replay beckoning Marc de Vries broke through and slotted in to make it 3-2. Elsewhere, Sunderland AFC defeated non-league Northwich Victoria FC 3-0.
