Portsmouth claim D'Alessandro coup

Transfer round-up: Argentinian midfielder Andrés D'Alessandro has joined Portsmouth FC, while Tottenham Hotspur made a last-minute raid.

English Premiership strugglers Portsmouth FC have taken Argentinian international midfielder Andrés D'Alessandro on loan from German Bundesliga club VfL Wolfsburg. The 24-year-old, who has made 61 Bundesliga appearances since joining Wolfsburg from CA River Plate in 2003, will be at Fratton Park until 15 May.

Feyenoord midfielder Hossam Ghaly has joined Tottenham Hotspur FC on a four-and-a-half year contract, while Danny Murphy arrives from Charlton Athletic FC in a deal which could be worth €3m to the Addicks. The 24-year-old Egyptian international, who played for Al-Ahly before joining Feyenoord in 2003, had struggled to find a niche in the Rotterdam side due to intense competition for midfield places. Murphy, 28, joined Charlton 18 months ago after seven years at Liverpool.

Meanwhile, transfer-listed Spurs midfield player Michael Brown has joined the Premiership side's London rivals Fulham FC on a three-and-a-half year contract. "I'm really looking forward to working with Chris Coleman and the rest of the squad," said the 29-year-old.

RC Deportivo La Coruña's Lionel Scaloni - who can operate as a right-back, right midfield player or even in central midfield - has moved to another London club, West Ham United FC, on loan until the end of the season, while strugglers West Bromwich Albion FC have paid almost €2m for Southampton FC and Scotland midfielder Nigel Quashie.

Charlton have also allowed Finnish international forward Jonatan Johansson to join Norwich City FC of the second division on loan for the rest of the season. The 30-year-old has started just one Premiership match this season.

In Italy, AS Livorno Calcio have signed 33-year-old defender Stefano Argilli on a two-year contract from Modena FC, while Ascoli Calcio 1898 have acquired Croatian forward Igor Budan on loan from Atalanta BC for the rest of the campaign. The 25-year-old scored five Serie A goals for Atalanta last term.

Feyenoord have loaned Tunisian defender Karim Saidi to Serie A side US Lecce for the remainder of the season, with the Italian club having the option of signing the 22-year-old permanently when his contract expires in the summer. Saidi is keen for first-team football in the run up to the 2006 FIFA World Cup finals.

FC København captain Bo Svensson will join VfL Borussia Mönchengladbach with immediate effect after an agreement was struck between the clubs. The 26-year-old centre-back was due to move to the Bundesliga team on a three-year contract in the summer but will now head to Germany this week.

French side FC Girondins de Bordeaux have announced that 26-year-old Portuguese midfielder Paulo Sergio Costa has penned a permanent contract at Greek club Aris Thessaloniki FC.

Malian midfielder Drissa Diakité has agreed a four-and-a-half year contract with French team OGC Nice after leaving Algeria's Mouloudia Club d'Alger. The 21-year-old was recently voted best foreign player in Algerian football. He joins countrymen Sammy Traoré and Mamadou Bagayoko at the Ligue 1 outfit.

Club Atlético de Madrid reserve team player Braulio Nógrega Rodríguez has agreed to join struggling RCD Mallorca on loan until the end of the season. The 20-year-old will have to do his best if Mallorca are to avoid relegation from the Primera División.

Spain's bottom side Málaga CF have signed Portuguese international Jorge Ribiero on loan from FC Dinamo Moskva for the remainder of the season, with the option of a further three-year deal at the end of the campaign. "I want to help the club out of this difficult situation," said Jorge Ribiero. Meanwhile, the Andalusian club have loaned forward Paco Esteban, 24, to second division side CF Ciudad de Murcia until the end of the season to gain experience before returning in June.

Danish club Silkeborg IF have signed 23-year-old defender Bjarni Olafur Eriksson from Icelandic side Valur Reykjavík on a two-and-a-half year contract. "I needed a new challenge, and if I can prove myself in Danish football, I can probably keep my place in the national team," said Eriksson.

Swedish international Daniel Majstorovic has left Dutch side FC Twente for Swiss champions FC Basel 1893. The 28-year-old former Malmö FF defender is keen to earn a place in the Sweden squad for the 2006 FIFA World Cup, and leaves Twente following a recent clash with a team-mate.

Portuguese side CF Estrela da Amadora have signed former Boavista FC midfielder André Paulo Barreto on loan for the rest of the season. The 26-year-old Brazilian has been playing in Poland with Wisła Kraków.

Scottish Premier League outfit Motherwell FC have landed striker Abel Thermeus on loan from French Ligue 2 team US Créteil till the season's end. The 25-year-old started his career with AS Monaco FC but has spent the last two seasons with Créteil.

Aberdeen FC have signed Feyenoord left-back Ferne Snoyl on loan for the remainder of the season. The 20-year-old has been short of action since Pascal Bosschaart's return to fitness at the De Kuip. "This is a great opportunity to get back to playing football," said Snoyl.
