Zaragoza cup adventure continues

Members

By reaching the Copa del Rey semi-finals, Real Zaragoza have embellished an already rich tradition in that competition while also denying FC Barcelona.

Rijkaard record
While Frank Rijkaard is yet to win a key two-legged match with FC Barcelona, losing against Celtic FC in the UEFA Cup and against Zaragoza in the Copa del Rey quarter-finals in his first season, and then against Chelsea FC in last year's UEFA Champions League, Zaragoza march on.

Óscar winner
Striker Óscar González, whose spectacular goal in the 2-1 defeat at Camp Nou secured a 5-4 aggregate victory, said: "We practise scoring like that in training and I did it tonight. More than knocking Barcelona out of the cup, we have shown that this team have the qualities of champions."

Muñoz satisfaction
Zaragoza coach Víctor Muñoz said: "Barcelona were the better team but we got through because of our performance at home - now we will be playing Real Madrid when some took it for granted that Barcelona would be." Zaragoza will meet a Madrid side hungry for an honour they have not won in 13 years.

Rich history
Zaragoza have played in the Copa del Rey final eight times, winning six. They lost to Barcelona in the 1963 showpiece, but beat Club Atlético de Madrid the following season. In 1966 they collected a second cup and in 1986 defeated Barcelona in the final for a second time.

Madrid meeting
The trophy returned to the northern city again in 1994, 2000 and 2004. The last celebrations came when they overcame Madrid 3-2 - and that success will be in Zaragoza minds when they take on Juan Ramón López Caro's men in the semi-finals on 8 and 15 February.
