Article body
Chelsea FC striker Didier Drogba scored the winning penalty for Ivory Coast against Cameroon after FC Barcelona star Samuel Eto'o missed the vital spot-kick in an epic shoot-out to settle the two teams' African Cup of Nations quarter-final on Saturday.
Tournament record
Drogba's strike settled the highest-scoring penalty shoot-out in the competition's history, 12-11, to book a semi-final against Nigeria on Tuesday. The match had finished 1-1 after 120 minutes, after Bakari Kone and Albert Ze Meyong scored for Ivory Coast and Cameroon in extra time.
Nigerian steel
Meanwhile, Nigeria also needed penalties to come through their meeting with holders Tunisia. Obinna Nsofor gave Nigeria the lead after just six minutes but they were pegged back when Haggui found the net for the Tunisians four minutes after the break. With extra time unable to separate the sides, it was Nigeria who eventually prevailed, 6-5 in the shoot-out.
Hosts through
Friday's two quarter-finals saw Senegal and hosts Egypt seal their places in the last four. Senegal edged an eventful encounter with Guinea 3-2, Henri Camara of the English Premiership's Wigan Athletic FC scoring the winning goal. While two goals for Ahmed Hassan, and one a-piece for veteran Hossam Hassan and Emad Moteab eased Egypt to a comfortable 4-1 victory over the Democratic Republic of Congo.
