Dortmund continue new-year revival

Members

In-form BV Borussia Dortmund maintained their renaissance with a win that moves them within a point of Hertha BSC Berlin, who held FC Bayern München.

Expectant crowd
After a goalless first half at the Westfalenstadion, defender Brzenska broke the deadlock midway through the second to start the celebrations. With victories against VfL Wolsburg and MSV Duisburg already in 2006, as well as a draw at FC Schalke 04, Dortmund confirmed their revival two minutes from time when Rosický slotted in a penalty after a foul by Tobias Willi, who was sent off.

Hertha dominance
The win lifts Dortmund to sixth place, one point behind Hertha, who almost caught Bayern cold at the Olympiastadion. The visitors were delayed en route to the ground, arriving half-an-hour before kick-off and aside from a first-half effort from Michael Ballack, Hertha goalkeeper Gerhard Tremmel enjoyed a quiet evening. However, the dominant home team could not muster a goal to reflect their superiority.

Relegation tussle
There were goals at the Fritz-Walter-Stadion, where the bottom two sides, 1. FC Kaiserslautern and 1. FC Köln, played out an entertaining 2-2 draw. Swiss international Marco Streller twice handed the visitors the advantage, but Kaiserslautern hit back, first through Boubacar Sanogo's penalty before 18-year-old Fabian Schönheim's first Bundesliga strike earned a draw that does little for either club's survival prospects. The evening's other match between 1. FSV Mainz 05 and DSC Arminia Bielefeld ended 1-1.
