Olympique de Marseille failed to make up ground on LOSC Lille Métropole in the chase for the third UEFA Champions League qualifying place in Ligue 1 as the two sides drew in northern France.

Lille stalemate
Four points behind their opponents going into the match at the Métropole stadium, Marseille - who were without goalkeeper Fabien Barthez because of injury - were second best for much of the game, which finished 0-0. The southerners could have snatched a late victory, but Mamadou Niang's close-range attempt was stopped by Sengalese compatriot and Lille goalkeeper Tony Sylva. Marseille remain in fifth place while Lille are third, two points ahead of AJ Auxerre, who lost 4-1 away to Paris St-Germain FC in Sunday's late game.

Kalou double
PSG are now back in contention for a European berth themselves after an emphatic victory in which Bonaventure Kalou scored twice to add to René Bolf's own goal and a stike from Pauleta, the leading scorer in Ligue 1. Meanwhile, RC Strasbourg enhanced their hopes of avoiding relegation as they pulled off an impressive 2-0 victory at AS Saint-Etienne - Ivorian striker Amara Diané and Swedish midfielder Pontus Farnerud the men on target to move Strasbourg to within three points of safety.
