Bordeaux blunted as Calais win

Amateur side Calais RUFC revived their love affair with the French Cup, but FC Girondins de Bordeaux are out after losing to Montpellier HSC of Ligue 2.

Amateur side Calais RUFC continued their love affair with the French Cup after overcoming Stade Brestois 29 in extra time but Ligue 1 high-fliers FC Girondins de Bordeaux are out after falling at Montpellier HSC.

Calais's recurrent dream
Calais enjoyed a fairytale cup run in the 1999/00 season when they reached the final before losing 2-1 to FC Nantes Atlantique, and the fourth division side are dreaming of glory again after winning 1-0 against Ligue 2's Brest. Mathieu Hoguet scored the decisive goal with a header five minutes before the end of extra time.

Bugnet winner
Meanwhile, on the south coast, second-tier Montpellier completed a well-earned win against Bordeaux as Hervé Bugnet came back to haunt his former employers. The 24-year-old was on hand to score the only goal of the game on 36 minutes after Jérôme Lafourcade's strike had hit the post. Earlier in the day, FC Sochaux-Montbéliard were made to pay for missed chances by Olypmique de Marseille, who reached the last eight thanks to two goals in the last 13 minutes from Toifilou Maoulida.

Lille through
LOSC Lille Métropole made lighter work of their tie against fourth division AS Vitré. Nicolas Fauvergue put the visitors ahead after just eight minutes before Geoffrey Dernis completed the scoring 12 minutes later. The draw for the quarter-finals will take place on Sunday at the Stade de France.
