Barça edge closer with Racing draw

FC Barcelona need just eight points from six matches to retain their Primera División crown following Sunday's draw at Real Racing Club Santander.

FC Barcelona edged closer to retaining their Primera División title with a 2-2 draw at Real Racing Club Santander on Sunday. They are now eleven points clear of Valencia CF and Real Madrid CF with six games to play.

Puyol dismissal
Henrik Larsson opened the scoring for Barça on 18 minutes, but Racing hit back with two goals of their own from Antoñito and Óscar Serrano within five minutes. Samuel Eto'o pulled the visitors level and reacted angrily in his goal celebration, running to the touchline and kicking the corner flag after being subjected to racist abuse. Referee Antonio Rubinos Pérez said in his report: "In the 34th minute of the game a group of fans chanted making the sound of a monkey when Eto'o touched the ball. I asked the club to make an announcement over the PA system calling for the fans to show respect towards the participants. This message went out soon after." Barcelona had captain Carles Puyol sent off late on for two yellow cards, meaning he will miss Friday's game against fellow UEFA Champions League semi-finalists Villarreal CF.

Franco on target
Villarreal and RC Deportivo La Coruña stay eighth and seventh respectively after a 1-1 draw at El Madrigal kept both teams in contention for a UEFA Cup place. Midfielder Sergio González put Deportivo in front on 71 minutes, a lead which lasted only two minutes as Mexican international striker Guillermo Franco earned the home side a share of the points. CA Osasuna are within a point of Valencia and Madrid following a 2-1 win at Deportivo Alavés. Pierre Webo and Savo Milosević were on target for the Navarrans, who had Miguel Flaño sent off. Athletic Club Bilbao-RCD Mallorca, RCD Espanyol-Club Atlético de Madrid and Sevilla FC-Real Zaragoza all finished 1-1. Sevilla are now six points off fourth spot and a berth in the UEFA Champions League qualifying rounds.
