The Premiership title race could be back on after Manchester United FC defeated Bolton Wanderers FC 2-1 to close the gap on Chelsea FC, who drew 0-0 at struggling Birmingham City FC earlier on Saturday, to seven points.
Late chances
In a match of few chances at St Andrews, Chelsea passed by two of them in the closing stages. The first of them fell to Hernán Crespo in the 88th minute as the Argentinian latched on to Joe Cole's pass and shot straight at Maik Taylor from a promising position. Ricardo Carvalho then headed over after being found free in the box from a corner as the game entered added time.
Unhappy Mourinho
Manager Jose Mourinho said: "I am concerned as I want to win every game. I'm not happy with the performance and result. We did not deserve to win the game, Birmingham deserved a point and showed great spirit. I have to praise the way they fought. [The title] is in our hands. The important thing is we keep winning our matches at home and we will be champions again."
Van Nistelrooij winner
United capitalised at Bolton, recovering from falling behind to Kevin Davies's 26th-minute opener to win 2-1. In-form French striker Louis Saha drew Sir Alex Ferguson's side level in the 33rd minute, and turned provider with eleven minutes remaining by playing in Ruud van Nistelrooij to score his second winning goal in four days, having struck against West Ham United FC in midweek.
Awesome Arsenal
Arsenal FC built on their superb UEFA Champions League victory against Juventus by again turning on the style at Highbury, defeating Aston Villa FC 5-0. Emmanuel Adebayor (19), Thierry Henry (25 & 46), Robin van Persie (71) and Abou Diaby (80) scored for Arsenal, who moved to within two points of fourth-placed Tottenham Hotspur FC following their 3-1 defeat at Newcastle United FC, all the goals coming in the opening half-hour.
In-form Portsmouth
Liverpool FC consolidated third spot as they won 2-0 at West Bromwich Albion FC, leaving the Baggies level on 27 points with Portsmouth FC in the final relegation spot after the south-coast club recorded their third successive victory when winning 3-1 at Fulham FC. Sunderland AFC avoided relegation today after leaving Everton FC with a 2-2 draw.
