Predatory strike
Paul Stalteri and Michael Carrick struck either side of half-time for Martin Jol's side before Giorgios Samaras's goal set up a tense finale. Stalteri pounced after 44 minutes after City goalkeeper David James could only parry Richard Dunne's shot, and it appeared to be game over for Stuart Pearce's side when Carrick raced through to drive Teemo Tainio's ball past James after the interval. However, Greek forward Samaras put City back into the hunt after 52 minutes, turning a long throw-in from Sylvain Distin past current England No1 Paul Robinson.
Bellamy double
Two goals from striker Craig Bellamy were not enough to earn Blackburn Rovers FC a victory at improving Portsmouth FC. The Welsh international opened the scoring in the first half and looked to have sealed victory for Mark Hughes's side after Lomano Tresor Lua-Lua had equalised for Portsmouth. However, a 78th-minute goal for Bulgarian Svetoslav Todorov earned Harry Redknapp's men a 2-2 draw.
Match called off
In the day's other early Premiership fixtures, Charlton Athletic FC held Everton FC to a 0-0 draw at the Valley while Sunderland AFC's game against Fulham FC was called off due to a snowstorm with the visitors leading 1-0. Sunderland would have been relegated had Birmingham City FC won at Wigan Athletic FC in the day's late match, but the game ended in a 1-1 draw.
