Canobbio keeps Celta on track

Members

Two goals from Néstor Canobbio helped RC Celta de Vigo keep their aspirations of a UEFA Champions League place alive with a 4-0 rout of Real Zaragoza.

Canobbio double
Canobbio put his side on track after half an hour before Jorge Larena doubled the home side's advantage a minute after the restart. Jesús Perera added a third with ten minutes to go and the 26-year-old Canobbio completed the scoring with Celta's next attack. The win puts Fernando Vázquez's men two points behind fourth-placed CA Osasuna who play relegation-threatened RCD Mallorca on Sunday.

Villarreal defeat
Elsewhere, UEFA Champions League semi-finalists Villarreal suffered defeat at home to Real Sociedad after Manuel Pellegrini rested ten players from the side that lost 1-0 to Arsenal FC on Wednesday. Mikel Alonso and Mark González provided the goals as the visitors ran out 2-0 winners. A 22nd-minute strike from Antonio López, meanwhile, gave Club Atlético de Madrid a narrow victory at Deportivo Alavès, lifting the club from the capital a point above Villarreal in eighth. Alavès remain entrapped in the bottom three, one point from safety.
