Lennon winner boosts Tottenham

Members

Aaron Lennon enhanced his England squad chances and strengthened Tottenham Hotspur's FC's grip on fourth place as they beat Bolton Wanderers FC.

Lennon on song
Young forward Aaron Lennon enhanced his reputation as he got the only goal at White Hart Lane for Tottenham, who defeated Bolton Wanderers FC. Lennon collected Michael Carrick's cross before firing a low drive into the corner of the net on the hour mark. Bolton, who still retain hopes of a UEFA Cup place, performed well and were unlucky not to score when Hidetoshi Nakata struck a fierce shot against the post.

Tottenham clear
Lennon, who some feel has a claim to come into the England squad, earned three points for Tottenham that took them seven clear of nearest rivals Arsenal in fifth place. The Gunners, who have two games in hand, can close the gap to four if they win at relegated Sunderland AFC on Monday.

Rooney speculation
Meanwhile, Rooney and the fractured metatarsal bone he has in his right foot have been the subject of fevered speculation ever since he was carried off in Manchester United FC's 3-0 defeat at Chelsea FC on Saturday. Initial suggestions that he will need six weeks' recovery time make him an unlikely starter for England's opening group matches at Germany 2006.

Eriksson gamble
Head coach Sven-Göran Eriksson has confirmed he will take Rooney to the finals if medical opinion is in favour of the decision. He said: "Wayne is a world-class player and we will give him every chance to play in the World Cup. With such a huge talent you have to do that."

Owen relief
There was some good news for Eriksson after Newcastle United striker Michael Owen showed no bone damage when he had a scan on his foot after reporting some discomfort following his return to action for the first time on Saturday since suffering the same injury as Rooney on 31 December.

Pain expected
A Newcastle spokesman said: "Michael had various tests early on Sunday and the results were positive. The specialist said it was normal to feel some pain in the first couple of games back after an injury like this." Eriksson has to submit his official World Cup squad on 15 May, though he is expected to name his provisional line-up a week earlier.
