Shevchenko calls time at Milan

Andriy Shevchenko has declared he is leaving AC Milan, citing "family reasons" as the reason for ending a seven-year relationship with the Rossoneri.

Andriy Shevchenko has declared he is leaving AC Milan citing "family reasons" as the reason for ending a seven-year relationship with the Rossoneri.

'Family reasons'
The 2004 European Footballer of the Year revealed his plans today after a meeting with Milan vice-president Adriano Galliani. English champions Chelsea FC have been strongly linked with a move for the striker, who is the all-time leading scorer in the European Champion Clubs' Cup with 52 goals. "My decision has nothing to do with money or with problems at Milan," Shevchenko said. "I have decided to move only for family reasons." The 29-year-old is married to an American model and is reportedly eager to give his son Jordan an English education.

'Painful departure'
Galliani said: "Obviously the English language defeated the Italian. We tried to convince him to stay until the last minute. Now we will have to find an agreement with Chelsea. It is the most painful departure since I started to work for Milan." Shevchenko scored 173 goals for the Serie A side after joining from FC Dynamo Kyiv in 1999, helping the Rossoneri to win the UEFA Champions League in 2003 and the Scudetto the following season.
