Tottenham Hotspur FC have agreed a €16m fee with Bayer 04 Leverkusen for striker Dimitar Berbatov. The Bulgarian international, who scored 21 Bundesliga goals this season, has also settled his personal terms and will move to London subject to a successful work permit application.

Three-time winner
The 25-year-old, the second-highest scorer in Germany's top flight in 2005/06, has 47 international caps and was named Bulgarian Player of the Year in 2002, 2004 and 2005. He joined Leverkusen from PFC CSKA Sofia in 2001 and went on to register 69 goals in 154 league games, while also being part of the team that reached the 2002 UEFA Champions League final. "Tottenham are a club that is building something special," Berbatov said. "The squad has some terrific young players, an excellent manager and coaching staff, and I am looking forward to playing my part."

High interest
Tottenham director of football Damien Comolli added: "There were a number of clubs interested in Dimitar and we are delighted he has chosen us. He is a tall, skilful, highly-talented striker who not only has a proven track record of being able to finish, but also of creating opportunities for team-mates." Provided the club's work permit application goes through, Berbatov will be able to play in the UEFA Cup next season after Tottenham finished fifth in the Premiership.
