Aguirre takes leave of Osasuna

Javier Aguirre has resigned as coach of CA Osasuna despite leading his side to fourth in the Primera División and a place in the UEFA Champions League.

The 48-year-old Mexican coach came to the Spanish side in 2002/03 after a year in charge of the Mexican national team. Having achieved a major success last season in leading his side to the Copa del Rey final, he went one better this campaign by defying the odds to finish high up the Spanish table.

However, he will not be leading Osasuna as they start their first ever UEFA Champions League campaign in the third qualifying round of the competition next season with rumours linking him to the vacant coach's position at Club Atlético de Madrid.
