Lille hit back to clinch third

LOSC Lille Métropole secured a second consecutive season in the UEFA Champions League by coming from two goals down to claim a 2-2 draw away against Stade Rennais FC. The result clinched third place for Lille, who join FC Girondins de Bordeaux and Olympique Lyonnais in Europe's top club competition.

Marseille disappointment
Alexander Frei had put Rennes two goals up, while Olympique de Marseille went 1-0 in front against Bordeaux, as Toilfilou Maoulida's goal 15 minutes from time meant that Marseille moved into provisional third place. However, a Bordeaux equaliser coupled with RC Lens' 3-1 win against FC Nantes Atlantique ensured that Marseille finished fifth and will have to settle for a place in the UEFA Intertoto Cup. Lens take fourth and celebrate their centenary year with automatic UEFA Cup qualification.

Lyon deluge
Lyon have been in party mode since clinching their fifth title in a row in mid-April. However, they made a mockery of accusations that they had taken their foot off the gas, defeating Le Mans UC 72 at the Stade Gerland. The visitors took a shock lead before being buried under a deluge of Lyon goals including a Fred hat-trick and one each for Cris, Sylvain Wiltord, Juninho Pernambucano, Sidney Govou and Tiago. The French FA have also announced that they will keep the league trophy in recognition of their achievements.

Ajaccio win
In the day's other games, AC Ajaccio defeated AS Saint-Etienne 3-1, AJ Auxerre won 4-0 against RC Strasbourg and Metz FC beat Paris Saint-Germain FC 1-0. FC Sochaux Montbéliard and OGC Nice claimed 2-1 wins away against Toulouse FC and ES Troyes Aube Champagne respectively, while the game between AS Monaco FC and AS Nancy-Lorraine finished 2-2.
