Guerrero heading for Hamburg

José Paolo Guerrero is swapping one UEFA Champions League contender for another in Germany by leaving FC Bayern München for Hamburger SV for an undisclosed fee.

The 22-year-old Peru striker will become the fifth player to depart the Bundesliga champions this summer following in the footsteps of Michael Ballack, who has gone to Chelsea FC, Zé Roberto and the retired duo of Bixente Lizarazu and Jens Jeremies. Guerrero, who appeared seven times in the UEFA Champions League last term, had two years remaining on his Bayern contract and has agreed a four-year deal at Hamburg.

'Great potential'
"Paolo has shown great potential with Bayern," said Hamburg sporting director Dietmar Beiersdorfer. "His goalscoring record is impressive, he is skilful and can provide assists for others as well as scoring. We are sure he has yet to realise his full potential." Guerrero added: "Hamburg showed how strong they are during the Bundesliga season. I am looking forward to joining HSV and will do all I can to be a success."

Never a regular
Guerrero moved to Munich in 2002 from Peruvian side Club Alianza Lima and was part of the first-team squad over the last two seasons, as Bayern did the double in each. Overall, he scored ten goals in 27 league games but never held down a regular place. Unlike Bayern, Hamburg have to qualify for the 2006/07 UEFA Champions League group stage after finishing third in the Bundesliga.
