Cygan and Fuentes fill Villarreal void

Villarreal CF have reacted quickly to the departure of Juan Pablo Sorín for Hamburger SV by signing another Argentinian defender, Fabricio Fuentes, from Mexican side CD Atlas, and Arsenal FC centre-back Pascal Cygan.

Impressive spell
The 29-year-old Fuentes, who spent the 2003/04 season at French club EA Guingamp, will pen a three-year deal with the Primera División outfit subject to a medical. The move will end an impressive spell in Guadalajara where Fuentes has become indispensable for Atlas following a transfer from CA Vélez Sarsfield. Capped once at international level, he has also played for CA Newell's Old Boys and Quilmes CA.

Cygan switch
Cygan, meanwhile, will move to Spain on a two-year deal although he also has yet to pass a medical. The deal for the 32-year-old, who joined Arsenal from LOSC Lille Métropole in 2002, is thought to be worth almost €3m and means Cygan will be reunited with former Arsenal team-mate Robert Pirès, who moved to El Madrigal earlier in the summer.
