Former Dutch international defender Mario Melchiot has joined Stade Rennais FC on a one-year contract after he was released by Birmingham City FC.

Former Dutch international defender Mario Melchiot has joined Stade Rennais FC on a one-year contract after he was released by Birmingham City FC earlier in the summer.

Experienced campaigner
The 29-year-old right-back has been signed as cover for the injured Jean-Joël Perrier-Doumbé but brings to the Brittany club plenty of experience from his time with AFC Ajax and Chelsea FC. In all, he spent seven seasons in England, ending with Birmingham's relegation from the Premiership last May. Rennes have also recruited striker Daniel Moreira and midfielder Bruno Cheyrou since finishing seventh in Ligue 1 last term.
