Christian Vieri has signed a one-year contract with newly promoted Atalanta BC, just one month after cancelling his contract with UC Sampdoria.
Fresh start
Vieri had joined Sampdoria in July from AS Monaco FC, but has now agreed a minimum basic wage deal with Atalanta, for whom he made his Serie A debut back in 1995. Under the deal, Vieri will be paid more according to how much he plays and scores. The 32-year-old striker, who missed the FIFA World Cup because of a knee injury, has scored 22 goals in 43 internationals for Italy. He counts Juventus, Club Atlético de Madrid, S.S. Lazio - with whom he won the UEFA Cup Winners' Cup - FC Internazionale Milano and AC Milan among his former clubs. He left Milan for Monaco last January but managed just seven league appearances for them.
Doni arrives
Atalanta are also set to announce the arrival of another of their former players, Italy international Cristiano Doni, who is expected to sign a two-year contract with the Bergamo side tomorrow. The 32-year-old midfielder, who spent five seasons at Atalanta between 1998 and 2003, returns to Italy from RCD Mallorca. "We have reached an agreement with the player," Atalanta director Carlo Osti said.
