Marseille surprised, Lens soar

Olympique de Marseille failed to go top of Ligue 1 after losing at FC Nantes Atlantique while RC Lens achieved their third straight win against AS Monaco FC.

Olympique de Marseille missed the chance to go top of Ligue 1 when they were defeated 2-1 at FC Nantes Atlantique while RC Lens moved into third place with a 1-0 home win against AS Monaco FC.

Marseille slip
Victory would have taken Marseille to the summit of France's top flight but the southern club were overcome by a Nantes team who had begun the game in bottom place. Dimitri Payet opened the scoring on 37 minutes before Guillaume Norbert struck four minutes after the break to give new coach Georges Éo the perfect start to life at La Beaujoire. OM responded through Mamadou Niang 12 minutes from time after Nantes's Mauro Cetto had been sent off midway through the second half, but the hosts held firm for their first win of the season.

Jussiê penalty
Lens, meanwhile, took three points thanks to Brazilian forward Jussie's fifth-minute penalty. Francis Gillot's side climbed four places, taking their haul to 13 points from seven matches. Monaco slipped one spot and are second from bottom with four points after just one victory this term. Champions Olympique Lyonnais, chasing a sixth successive title, top the standings with 19 points after a 4-1 home success against Lille on Saturday.
