Werder Bremen are doing their best to keep emotions at bay after securing a 3-1 win in the weekend's big Bundesliga game against FC Bayern München.
Northern giants
The northern giants went into the match level on points with their southern rivals but are now three clear of Bayern after goals from Diego and Pierre Womé and an own goal from Lucio crowded out Roy Makaay's effort for the back-to-back German double winners at the Weserstadion. While he did not score, Germany forward Miroslav Klose had another splendid game for Bremen. He was keen to urge his team-mates to take full advantage of their current good form in the coming weeks. "We can't afford to sit back in times of success," he said.
'A good spell'
Fellow German international Per Mertesacker, who was delighted to report that he was "very happy at being made to fit in so well" since his move from Hannover 96 in the summer, remained unimpressed by his side's league position. "I don't care at all," he said. "It only counts that we are having a good spell."
Fun football
Coach Thomas Schaaf is convinced a convivial atmosphere in the squad is a major factor in Bremen's form. "It is fun to work with this side. The team are in harmony and are ready to do their best." Defensive midfielder Torsten Frings added: "It is great to play in this team. For a footballer it is fantastic to be a part of a side which enjoys football and doesn't just hammer the ball upfield."
Diego impresses
Brazilian midfield general Diego has certainly benefited from that environment, and is the club's top scorer with four goals, having joined from FC Porto in the summer. "I am happy that Diego has adapted so quickly and taken on Johan Micoud's old role so well," said sporting director Klaus Allofs. "He doesn't only shine with goals and assists but also with his spectacular style which is popular for the fans."
