Martin Petrov faces a six-month absence after damaging cruciate ligaments in action for Club Atlético de Madrid at the weekend.

Awkward twist
The 27-year-old striker, who scored four goals in Bulgaria's opening four UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifiers, was taken off after 35 minutes of the 2-1 Primera División win against RC Recreativo de Huelva on Saturday after an awkward twist saw him damage the ligaments in his left knee. Medical tests soon revealed the extent of his injury and he will undergo surgery today. "The dressing room is feeling really low," said Atlético coach Javier Aguirre. "I don't care about the match because the important thing is the player's injury."

Double blow
Ironically, Atlético players had taken the field wearing shirts giving their support to team-mate Maxi Rodríguez who had damaged cruciate ligaments while on international duty with Argentina last Wednesday. Maxi has also been ruled out for six months. Bulgaria's next competitive fixture is on 28 March 2007 when they take on Albania in UEFA EURO 2008™ qualifying Group G.
