Article body
Third division Rayo Vallecano knocked the holders RCD Espanyol out of the Copa del Rey on an evening when Real Sociedad de Fútbol and CG Tarragona were also eliminated by lower league opposition in the fourth round.
Top-flight losers
After drawing 1-1 at home in the first leg two weeks ago, Vallecano's Míchel Sánchez scored the only goal of the return eleven minutes into the second half to stun Espanyol at their own stadium. Struggling Real Sociedad overcame Málaga CF 2-1, but crashed out 5-3 on aggregate, while Tarragona lost 3-1 at home and 4-1 over two legs to second division Real Valladolid.
Saviola double
Two goals from Javier Saviola helped FC Barcelona ease to a 4-0 win against CF Badalona, while Real Betis Balompié, Valencia CF and last season's losing finalists Real Zaragoza also progressed against teams from outside the Primera División. There were also wins for Villarreal CF, CA Osasuna and Sevilla FC while RC Deportivo La Coruña required penalties to squeeze past Real Racing Club Santander. Getafe CF won through 3-2 on aggregate despite a 2-1 loss against Xerez CD and RCD Mallorca came through with a 2-1 extra-time win against Athletic Club Bilbao.
